Google’s AI Overviews Dwarf ChatGPT Search. That’s Why They Matter
7/20/2026
AI search is growing fast, and the headlines make it sound like Google is finished. It is not. Google still runs search by a wide margin, and the AI answers that matter most are the ones appearing inside Google itself: AI Overviews. They are not locked away in ChatGPT or Perplexity. They sit on the results page where search already happens, which is exactly why their data is the one AI-search signal you can actually act on.
Google still owns search: trillions of queries a year
Google has said it handles more than 5 trillion searches a year, which works out to roughly 13.7 billion a day. That figure was public as of March 2025, and newer numbers are overdue. Even so, nothing in AI search comes close to that scale yet.
AI search is growing, but it has not caught Google
AI tools now handle a lot of activity. In July 2025, OpenAI said ChatGPT was fielding about 2.5 billion prompts a day. But a prompt is not a search. Plenty of that is writing, coding, summarizing, and planning, work that never lived in Google to begin with. The share that is actually search-like is estimated at around a third. Perplexity is smaller and more search-focused: its CEO put it at 780 million queries in May 2025, about 30 million a day. Add it up and AI search is real, growing, and still a long way from Google’s scale.
AI Overviews bring AI answers inside Google
Here is the part that changes the SEO equation. Google is not watching AI search from the sidelines. It is putting AI-generated answers directly into its own results. In July 2025, Sundar Pichai said AI Overviews had more than 2 billion monthly users across more than 200 countries and 40 languages. The user never has to leave Google or pick an AI engine. The AI answer is right there on the results page. So a page can still rank and still lose the click, because the AI Overview above it got there first.
How often do AI Overviews show up?
Google does not publish how often it serves an AI Overview. Third-party research puts it around 45% of searches. At 13.7 billion searches a day, that is roughly 6.1 billion AI Overviews served daily. Our own tracking shows 51.5% across the keywords we monitor, though the sample is still limited.
Google’s AI Overview volume dwarfs ChatGPT search
Put the two side by side. ChatGPT’s 2.5 billion daily prompts, taken down to the third that are search-like, come to about 825 million search-like prompts a day. Google serves roughly 6.1 billion AI Overviews in that same day. Google’s AI Overview slice alone is something like seven times ChatGPT’s entire search volume. The comparison mixes prompts with searches, so treat it as directional, not exact. The direction is the whole point: the AI answers with the most reach by far are the ones inside Google.
Why AI Overview data is now an essential SEO metric
Traditional reports track rankings, impressions, clicks, and conversions. Those still matter. AI Overviews add a layer underneath them. To see the full picture, you now need to know, for each keyword:
- Whether the keyword triggers an AI Overview
- Whether your site is cited in it
- Which competitors are cited instead
- Whether you still rank organically on the same result
- Which People Also Ask questions surround the topic That layer explains what standard reports cannot: why traffic moves when rankings do not. A page can hold its ranking and still lose clicks to the overview above it, or lose ground because a competitor got cited and you did not.
Optimizing for AI Overviews now sets you up for what comes next
The terminology is still a mess (GEO, AEO, AIO, take your pick), but the underlying job is the same: be the answer AI systems cite. Google AI Overviews are the one place you can measure that today. The strong bet is that the content and structure earning citations in AI Overviews now will carry over as the other AI engines grow and eventually hand over usable data of their own. Optimize where you can measure, and you are positioned for where you cannot yet.
See which of your keywords trigger AI Overviews
PowRank tracks which of your keywords generate AI Overviews, which URLs get cited, whether your site is included, whether you still show in the organic results, and which People Also Ask questions appear. Use it to see how AI Overviews are reshaping your performance before you decide what to optimize next.
